Overview

Set in a Pera apartment building from the turn of the century, this flat was approached so as to keep its original character while adapting it to contemporary family life. The high ceilings, timber joinery, and old fittings were carefully restored.

The spaces were rearranged around the daily flow of a modern family, yet the memory of the building was kept visible throughout.

Design Intention

The intention was not to set old against new but to let them speak within the same sentence. The restored original details were placed beside simple contemporary additions; neither overpowers nor imitates the other.

Material Palette

Restored herringbone parquet, lime wash, and patinated brass; joined by soft wool and aged oak. The colours were kept in the tones of the building's own age.

Spatial Experience

Passing through the entrance hall, the historic parquet speaks softly underfoot. Throughout the day, light from the high windows joins old and new surfaces in the same warmth. By evening, the flat settles into the familiar peace of a family home.

Details

Each original door handle was cleaned by hand and reused. The new kitchen repeats the proportions of the old sideboards. The library was made bespoke to follow the curved wall of the living room.
